Stay (Faraway, So Close!) guitar chords

U2 STAY (Faraway, So Close!)
As performed live by U2.

Transcribed by Javier Cayuela ( p0423@albeniz.eui.upm.es ).

Tune down half a step.

*corrections- *Stay--This song is in E, tuned down 1/2 step, and
the chords given are in fact correct, but they are an
octave too high. Start with E major, then F# major, then A
major chords, barring the last 2 going up the neck. Plus,
they are the chords as heard in the live version, and the
studio version sounds a little different. The main riff of
the song uses Eb, E, F# on the 2nd string.

You used to stay in to watch the adverts
You could lip synch to the talk shows

Stay, and the day would keep its trust
  F#m A E
Stay, and the night would be enough

(Edge plays main riff)
Faraway, so close
Up with the static and the radio
With satellite television
You can go anywhere
Miami, New Orleans, London, Belfast and Berlin

(Edge plays arpeggiated chords)
And if you listen I can't call
And if you jump, you just might fall
And if you shout I'll only hear you

	     F#m E
If I could stay... then the night would give you up
  F#m E
Stay, and the day would keep its trust
  F#m G#m
Stay with the demons you drowned
 A B
Stay with the spirit I found
 F#m A E
Stay and the night would be enough

(Bono stops, Edge plays main riff)
Three o'clock in the morning
It's quiet and there's no one around
Just the bang and the clatter
As an angel runs to ground
Just the bang and the clatter
As an angel hits the ground

TAB: "Stay" (Smashing Pumpkin’s Version)
Tabbed by James Krause jrkrause@uswest.net

I was listening to Billy Corgan's and James Iha's version of Stay
(Faraway, So Close!) and it sounded to me that it could be in an
alternate tuning. Feeling up to the challenge of figuring out the
tuning and chord shapes I grabbed my guitar. I tuned it to DADGAD and
actually figured out a nice version. However, after noodling around
for a few minutes I think that it's just in standard.

NOTES:
They play in the key of D and where E would normally be played they
play Em7. There is one exception to that and it's when Billy
sings, "You used to stay in the watch the adverts." I've made a note
below.

James Iha's part is simple, yet it gives it that alternate tuning
feel. Just try to sustain the notes as long as possible and let them
ring out. I think that you could incorporate his part in with the
chords for a good solo piece.

Also, they don't sing the whole song. If I've made any mistakes or if
you have any corrections, let me know.
Enjoy!
